I'm a serious photographer so I have 9000 images in Aperture and 6000 in iPhoto (almost 80 GB together). My photo collection is a bit of a mess…

I do not qualify as a serious photographer but I still have more than 4600 photos in iPhoto (which I will move over to Lightroom at some point) and more than 3000 in Lightroom now...

Minimum of 100 saved photos/week.

Of course, many are archived so they aren't in the active database.

I just need simple storage/organization, not not the be_all_end_all in photo management . iPhoto is just too much, but it works for most, I guess.

Back 'em Up

I back up my photos to CD/DVD at the end of each year, so I never have a gazillion viewable in iPhoto.

About 500 until my internal drive went TU. Of course a lot of the pix had the ex-wife in them so I am not too sad in having lost them ;-)

The grep command in the previous versions will match jpg patterns anywhere within the filename. Try this:

find -E ~/Pictures -type f -iregex '.*/*\.jp?.g$' | wc -l

A bit simpler:
find ~/Photos/Dir -iname *.jpg | wc -l

One day I hope to use iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom, or possibly iView MediaPro (I wonder why Microsoft felt they had to buy it?) to organize all of mine, including screen shots and such, but for now my folder hierarchy works well enough.

iView MediaPro (I wonder why Microsoft felt they had to buy it?)

It's obvious if you go to their site. They needed it to complete their graphics suite, just as Apple bought all those other products to complete Final Cut Studio.

I started shooting digital in 2000, and have a hard time deleting anything... I back up regularly to rotating pair of firewire hard drives. Everything is in iPhoto and has been for a while. I'm not particularly thrilled with the current version.

53,000+ You need more bins!
Authored by: Blah on Tue, Sep 11 2007 at 4:48PM PDT
The first thing I thought when reading this poll was: Why on earth do the bins top out at 15,000 ?! And by looking at the clumping at the top end, my instinct was right.

At the very least you should have:
* 15,000-19,999
* 20,000-24,999
* 25,000-50,000
* 50,000+

That said, I'd still be in the top bin.

* maybe even a 100,000+ for those insanely prolific photographers. Either that or camera-obsessed parents. ;-)

Seriously, go edit the bins quickly....

Almost 50,000

iPhoto says it has 3875, but using CLI tools, it says I have almost 50,000:

% ls -1aR /Volumes/Data/ | egrep -i '\.(jpg|jpeg)$' | wc -l
48162
