This is a good hint, but I use the Leopard version of Chax almost exclusively for the chat 'Log Viewer' which shows all of my saved chats grouped by screenname and fully searchable. Occationally I will just go in there and delete all chats from the AOL server screennames.

Since these messages really get on my nerves and iChat for Leopard reopens all chats that were not closed when quiting the program, I just quit out of iChat before I disconnect from VPN or the internal network and then fire it back up.
