If you don't want to jailbreak the phone, I'm thinking you could create a gmail (or any other email) account that you access with POP. You could just email the documents you want handy to that POP account and download them to the phone.

I haven't tried it, but I think it should work.

I confirm that the GMail account is THE solution to read Word and Excel files on the iPhone. I use it daily.

Jail Breaking the phone opens up sooo many possibilities. I just managed to get the iphone running a compact web server called lighttpd to serve local (on the iphone) pdfs to me whenever I want with no bookmarking or emailing. Check out the tutorial at codytaylor.org Feedback is always welcomed too.
