It works, but with a couple of caveats:

Icon previews are locked at 128px, so if you were hoping to see gorgeous detail on your desktop pictures, you're out of luck. Thankfully Quicklook obviates the need for this in most cases.
Grid spacing is nowhere near large enough. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a "max" key for that to edit. If anyone is interested, it's the next slider down in the xib.

I found if I moved the grid spacing slider all the way to the left then they displayed fine, even at 999x999 resolulution.
