Am I right in saying that therefore the only way to find out which files TM is backing up is to start Instruments every time before TM runs (at least for the first 24 hours)?
I really would like to avoid to constantly backing up some huge temp files some application is creating (and TM is not smart enough to avoid). Since once these files are in TM, I don't get them out again, even if I exclude them later, until they fall off the table once my drive gets full.

Just FYI, you can remove all versions of folders and files from Time Machine backups. Check out this article:
