New poll posted on the MacBook Air
You know, I get this device.
I understand what it is and to whom it will be sold. The Cube notwithstanding, I am sure Apple did their market research, and they will probably sell at least a million of these. But, it is definitely not what I was hoping for. First, as a support technician who services computers in fifteen different buildings and wants to always have his computer with him, I want a real sub-notebook. Small screen (10" - 12"), and with all the ports I need to do my job (seriously, what am I supposed to do with a computer that doesn't have ethernet - don't get me started on dongles). Second, as a support technician, I use firewire target disk mode a good amount. I probably won't miss it as much as I think I will, but at first glance, the lack of a firewire port disturbs me in a way I can't quite describe. Third, if you are going to make an $1800 laptop with low-end-ish specs, can't you just bite the bullet and make it a tablet already (to save face, you could call it an iPod Touch Advanced)? Ditch the keyboard Make it a multi-touch screen Bundle a compact bluetooth keyboard. For a true road warrior, there are obvious implications (two pieces instead of one, where to prop up the tablet while you use the keyboard), but these could be overcome with clever design (maybe the keyboard nests into the back of the tablet for storage, maybe the keyboard has a mechanism for mating with the tablet for extended typing sessions). |
