10.5: Install Leopard on an older Mac

I'd like to use the "firewire drive method." I plan to take my drive and DVD over to a friend's house to load Leopard on my drive. His machine is already running Leopard. I'll then plug the drive back into my desktop firewire port and select it as the start up drive. Will this work or will I need to remove the drive from the firewire case and physically place it into the desktop?
