10.5: Drag from stacks directly to other applications

What I don't understand about stacks is why you can't drag an item on to an application item in a stack to open it.

The only thing I can imagine stacks are useful for is as an application launcher (which is what i use my dock as) so I made stacks for different types of apps (utilities, word processing/research, photography etc.).

But, if I try to drag a file onto an item in the stack, then the stack opens in a finder window, and only then can I finish dragging the file onto the correct app to launch the application. Why can't I just drag the file onto the app in the stack itself?
