I don't know if I am missing something here, but I can make a alias of a network volume in any view by dragging the icon and holding down Option. An alias gets created when you release the mouse. Works on the desktop too.

My shared volumes are on the desktop, I have no problems with them appearing. Maybe you need to go to finder's preferences and make sure connected servers is checked for the desktop
