This worked for me in the icon view.

Connect to your shared drive
Drag the icon from the top of the finder window under (not on top of) the devices label in the sidebar (you will see a blue line appear indicating you are placing it in the sidebar)
Release the mouse

Dragging the icon from the menu bar when you have a window open for the share works, yes. However, dragging the icon for the share from the sharing section does not work unless you are in column view, which is the point being made in the first comment and the hint.I'd say dragging the icon from the menu bar is a good alternate approach, however.
