I also first thought, this is a bug. This new feauture can be ennoying when working with about 20 different servers in the company where only a few are mounted each day and every day in a different order... How to turn it off?

10.5: Keep hard drive icons anywhere on the desktop

i think there is a desktop bug in leopard. first i noticed (and posted to macintouch) that my sandisk u3 card was no longer mounting the u3 partition along with the data partition. under tiger, both partitions would mount with one having a cd icon.

anyway, even though i've told finder not to display local hard drives on the desktop, my bootcamp partition will not go away. also, when recording blank cd's and dvd's their icons don't disappear when the disc is ejected.

perhaps somehow these two seemingly unrelated items are related?

Turning it off

It's not really turning it off, but I'm guessing if you go to view options for the desktop and choose arrange by kind, Leopard will keep your volumes neatly organized for you.
