As the OP, I also thought that you also had to have a rule to play the sound, but there seems to be times when Mail.app just refuses or forgets to play notifications, and creating a rule that plays the sound will often cause multiple (and different) notifications to be played when mail comes in. Even without this script, Mail.app (in Leopard anyway) doesn't always seem to play the default notification.

Yes, I use sound notifications a lot and it's intermittent at best in Leopard.
Sometimes, sound is only played when I send an email and every sound that should have been played just plays at once, as if it was stuck or something.
