Not exactly a hint is it? This is even one of the features Jobs was demonstrating.

Ctrl+click is just an obvious extra shortcut.

Pushing the button on the toolbar does exactly the same thing when some text in the message is selected.

From my testing, you can select (or simply get the focus) on any message or any text within a message to create a Todos related to that message.
