My mistake. It does indeed look like you can not make Finder copies of CSS protected discs to view in FR or DVD Player. This used to be a feature in 10.1, but it looks like it's been removed. Unfortunately, the disc I was testing with was a commercially produced disc, but doesn't appear to be using any encryption.

So MacTheRipper or some other DVD ripper is needed to remove the encryption on encrypted discs for viewing in Front Row or DVD Player off the hard drive.
