Just FYI for anyone interested: I installed 10.5 onto a firewire drive using a supported G4 machine, and then tried to boot my Pismo (G3) off of the firewire drive. It kernel panicked before the little spinny thing showed up on the initial boot screen. Also tried booting a G3 iBook off of the same firewire drive. It showed the spinny thing, but then had a "silent" kernel panic (no kernel panic screen - it just never stopped spinning).

Doing that using the upgrade or A&I installation option on top of a Tiger installation, usually results in a prohibitory sign when trying to boot an unsupported Mac; at least that's what I found during beta-testing. Doing an Erase & Install from a supported Mac onto a FWHD and then using the Migration Assistant to transfer from the Tiger installation worked.

WRT to the noted hack and this one, http://blog.kupferman.net/?p=3, which I think is easier, if you don't modify the OSInstall.mpkg, then you won't be able to use it to run the Utilities, do an A&I installation, etc. Do the hack to a restored install disk on another volume or external HD.
