Why not just put the older Mac into FireWire Target Disk mode and use it as the external FW drive?

Well on my G4 that is a problem. The onboard firewire quit working a few years ago and the PCI firewire card drivers don't load in target mode. But yes that would be the preferred way, you are correct.

Just in case someone is still wondering if this is actually working: I've just installed Leopard successfully on a G4 800 MHz iBook (1.12 GB RAM).

I simply started it holding the T key in order to run it in FireWire target disk mode.
Then I installed Leopard from my G4 Dual 1.45 GHz PowerMac on the iBook's volume. It worked flawlessly.

After I restarted the iBook System Update also run without any troubles. 10.5.5 and all current updates are installed and the iBook is working like a charm.
