I agree with diamondsw. This is a stupid place to set the workgroup, especially since in Tiger the workgroups appeared in Network in the sidebar.

However, the name of the configuration file is a useful hint; never thought of looking there.

I do hope Apple pulls the workgroup setting somewhere up to a more accessible place. There have been a ton of posts about this, especially by people who could not find servers on their networks once they upgraded to Leopard.

Note: The name of the location in entirely arbitrary. It's the workgroup setting in the WINS tab that matters. Also, /var/run/smb.conf is a dynamic file, so if you just just edit that file, chances are the changes will go away in the future.
