Create your own ring tones on a stock 1.1.1 iPhone

Why not just open get info on one of your cd tracks in itunes that has not been downloaded from itunes and set your markers to start and stop for the length of the mp3 you want to create, then save it and move it to your desktop for file transfer to your phone?
