The Firewire/USB -combo-cable is essential when using any of the bigger iPods or iPhone as mere USB doesn't provide enough power to charge the unit AND transfer songs. If you connect the device to a computer when it's low on battery and immediately start loading it full of songs the unit might shutdown during the process. This shutdown can be "fatal" to the device.
