Yep, the USB ports on a Mac don't supply power when the Mac is sleeping; however, the FireWire ports do.

Another option would be to have the computer "wake from sleep" for an hour or two (not sure how long charging takes) and then sleep itself again. You can do this vis System Preferences --> Energy Saver --> Schedule...
