Also, make sure you allow time for the settings utility to authenticate your username/password. I just experienced this today when adding a non-GMail account. My personal serer authenticates slower than GMail and I would close the settings and move on only to find my account couldn't be accessed. After the 3rd time, (it's the charm isn't it?) I noticed the little spinning thing with the text "Authenticating password" on the top of the screen.
