Avoid an ID3 tag umlaut problem in iTunes 7.7

I didn't have any problems with a song which had an Ö (capital O with umlaut) in the Artist field of an ID3 2.2 tag. iTunes played it just fine without corrupting the tag. This was on Intel 10.5.4.

What field and character did you have? What encoding? (Unicode? ISO-8859-x ?) PowerPC? Intel? OS X version?

Maybe the files weren't corrupted at all. (I don't think iTunes would rewrite files while playing them.) It sounds like the interpretation of the contents changed. Maybe iTunes previously auto-detected the encoding for 2.2 tags, and now it always uses ISO-8859-1, which is correct, because UTF-8 wasn't allowed until 2.4 if I remember correctly. So maybe the tags already were already broken?
Unfortunately the files are converted now, so forensic analysis is impossible. :)

It can't have been a 2.2 encoding issues, because my songs already were all id v2.4, but still suffered from this problem (Björk became Bj^rk, etc.)

By the way, they also profited fom the same solution: converting from 2.4 to 2.4 (sic) made the filenames stable again.
