thanks, I'll look into the update you guys linked.
when I did this my precurser searches didn't turn up anything to help me -- and I didn't have Internet so I just jury-rigged it.

I had the same issue with leopards x11 and like others I just installed the lastest x11 for leopard from http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/Releases and it fixed the issue.
