More pointing out a new feature (though it is one that's not documented) than a hint.

In Mail 4.1, you no longer need to type the http:// part of a URL to make it clickable for the recipient. In previous versions of Mail, the text would not become a link without http://. Unfortunately, Mail still does not show your URL as a link while composing the email.

It will show the URL with link styling if you want it to. Right-click the text area and choose "Smart Links" from the "Substitutions" submenu.

I always use Edit>Add Link... just to be sure it works right. I hate sending URLs that aren't linkable, and I don't trust it if I can't see it while composing. I added a keystroke to make it easier to access. A side note: in the past, this method would do more of a <url=xxx>yyy</url>, and if you edited the text in the body, it wouldn't change the link. I'm not sure when that changed, but now if you change the text, the link changes too.
