10.6: Switch away from screen sharing without moving mouse System 10.6
Snow Leopard only hintA recent hint mentioned that all keystrokes in Snow Leopard get sent to the remote computer when Screen Sharing. This means that Command-Tab and other keystrokes get sent along, and there isn't a keyboard method for returning control to your Mac. Instead, you must move the mouse out of the shared window and click on a local window.

Sometimes, though, you might want to keep the mouse in a particular location in the remote computer. In particular, when I'm helping my mom remotely, I don't want my mouse movements to make the mouse on her screen move.

The solution? Push the power button on your computer. The "Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now?" dialog appears, and the mouse focuses on your local computer. Move the mouse outside the shared window, and then hit the Escape key, or just use Command-Tab to get to a different local window. (Be very careful not to hit the Return key, or you'll shut down your computer!). The shared computer mouse stays right where it was, and you're back to local control.

If you don't have a power key, control-eject will bring up the same dialog box. I agree with your statement that this can be dangerous. I hope we find a different way.

If you have a newer portable you can do the 4 finger left swipe to bring up the local application switcher.
But man a supported keyboard shortcut would be great! Thanks for the hint!

I use Screen Sharing to use my MacPro from my MacBook by checking emails, setting up renders etc and since the 10.6 update, I could Command-Tab out of the Screen Sharing.

To easily get back to my MacBook, I've set Screen Sharing to use 'Space 2' and the most of my day to day apps use 'Space 1'.

All commands are sent to the MacPro as far as Command-Tabbing is concerned but the shortcut Ctrl-Left Arrow (or Ctrl-RightArrow) shortcut to switch to a different space stay on my MacBook which enables me to switch back and forth with ease.

If you have one of the newer Apple keyboards (works on my Apple aluminium keyboard, and my MacBook Pro unibody), press the Expose button (on the F3 key), then select the local window you want. That function isn't sent to the remote machine.

Same works with the Dashboard button (on the F4 key), but NOT with the actual F keys assigned to Expose in system preferences; those ARE sent to the remote machine.

The exposé option works great! Thanks for that tip. Had I known about that, I would have used it as the original hint.

If you have Exposé programmed on your mouse, you can use your Exposé-programmed mouse buttons to switch to the window you want to go to.

I haven't tried it, but surely command+option+esc (force quit) would work. Then you don't have to move your right hand off the trackpad/mouse. No danger of turning off the computer and would have to hit enter twice to quit the app.

No, that's captured by the remote machine too.

That's strange. I've always been able to command-tab on my "local computer" while using Screen Sharing. I think when I switched to a MacBook Pro, the keystroke was captured by the remote Mac, but I don't remember changing anything and it started working normally shortly after.

Great hint!! Not being able to exit screen sharing without moving my mouse was really bothering me, especially when helping my grandma (it would really confuse her).
