Delete file from network volume without warning dialog Network
Whenever I delete a file from a network volume, I'm warned: 'The item "File name" will be deleted immediately. Are you sure you want to continue?' with Cancel or Delete as options. The Cancel button is always the default option. If you really want to delete the file, you need to use the mouse to select the non-default Delete button. Since I am always sure that I really want to delete this file, I'm a little annoyed by always having to use the mouse after typing Command-Backspace (the Move to Trash shortcut). After all, I am using a shortcut because I want to avoid using the mouse.

If you press Command-Option-Delete, however, the networked file will be deleted immediately, without any warning at all. As with the normal method of deleting a networked file, this deletes the file immediately.

[robg adds: You can avoid the mouse with the Command-Delete method by pressing Tab then Space after the dialog appears. If you look at the File menu with the Option key down, you'll see that the shortcut for Move to Trash changes to reflect the Option key's presence, but the description itself doesn't change. This works in both 10.5 and 10.6.]

Rob, I believe you can just hit the space bar, OR use tab enter/return, no?

Nevermind, the answer is no. I'm surprised that the cancel is both outlined in blue AND filled in.

Twould be nice to be able to delete embarrassing comments, though. :/

On my system (10.5.x) I just press the space bar to choose 'Delete'; it appears already blue-outlined (but not filled), and pressing space bar it's all I have to do. I enabled assistive devices, though (in the Universal Access pref pane).

In 10.6, Cmd+D is the keyboard shortcut to "click" that delete option in the alert.

It's not new. Command-d always has worked.

Being able to use Tab to navigate buttons requires the appropriate setting in System Preferences > Keyboard > Key combinations > All controls. (Not sure about the actual names, my OS X interface is not in English.)

I can always Tab & Space in Finder
Authored by: MJCube on Mon, Oct 19 2009 at 2:33PM PDT
Normally, yes, but I recently discovered that in the Finder in Leopard (10.5.8) I can navigate the buttons of such dialogs with Tab and Space, even though I keep Full Keyboard Access set to “Text boxes and lists only”! (This is not the new Cocoa Finder in Snow Leopard, and this is not the case for me with other apps. So it must be extra functionality deliberately added to the Finder for convenience.)

Wow, that's actually sad: someone at Apple finally got the clue and then implemented it in Finder rather than in some OS X library... :-(

(If only every dialog would respond to Command-letter shortcuts I'd already be happy...)

The Command-Option-Delete method for automatically deleting a file also works when removing files from a MobileMe iDisk.

Or use Cocoa Cookies

If you use Cocoa Cookies you can easily control the cookies that Safari remembers and delete the cookies, with a click, that you do not want.

The outlined button only works if full keyboard access has been turned on!

In 10.5 the default selection for the blue outlined button was OK. This changed with 10.6 which stupidly now puts the default to the already glowing Cancel button. So in 10.5 all you had to do was to hit the space bar. With 10.6 that changed to TAB, followed by space bar.

So I'm glad that I can avoid this dialog with ALT -> Great hint!

See my comment above: Tab and Space work for me in 10.5.8 even with FKA off.
BTW, the buttons in Leopard are Cancel [default], and Delete. Neither button says “OK”.

Sorry, I'm not using Mac OS in English and wasn't sure about the button's inscription. And I didn't know that it even works without FKA enabled. I will still keep it that way though, because it's handy to select the menu bar, Dock, etc. via keyboard.
