10.5: Disable CPU chirp in OS X 10.5 System 10.5
You can still turn processor nap on and off with the newest version of OS X (10.5.7 as of this writing) and the newest version of the CHUD tools (4.6.2 as of this writing), which are installed with Xcode. You simply have to install the Processor System Preferences pane manually after installing the CHUD tools. I did this on my old dual G5 2.0 GHz to eliminate the CPU's chirping sound. Here's how...

Once C.H.U.D. tools is installed, in Finder go to /Developer » Extras » PreferencePanes. Drag the Processor.prefpane file to /System » Library » PreferencePanes; the Finder will ask you to authenticate as an administrator to put it there, and then you're done!

You might have to reboot, but the Processor panel will then be available in System Preferences to turn nap on or off. Hope this helps you out!

[robg adds: This was covered originally in this hint, but it seems things have changed -- the Processor System Preferences panel used to be automatically installed.]

Instead of moving it – you especially shouldn't mess with the /System folder – you could simply double-click the .prefPane to install it.

Double-clicking has the added benefit of installing into /Library/Preference Panes, which is where it should really be installed.

10.5: Disable CPU chirp in OS X 10.5 (cpu whine?)

Just for the sake of the search: I guess the "chirp" may also refer to a high-pitched buzzing sound aka "cpu whine" aka "processor whine"?

Or am I wrong here?

No, it's actually a chirp. Like a small bird is stuck to your motherboard and wants to get out, but only once every couple seconds.

If you need sleep to always be off after every reboot, use the terminal to create a file called "rc.local" which needs to be in your "etc" folder.
The file should contain this:

hwprefs -v cpu_nap=false

The path should be /etc/rc.local

You can use pico to create the file within the terminal app :-)
This will make sure that sleep is set to off in the Processor pane.
ONLY for PPC's.

Processor control and MenuMeters incompatibility
Authored by: ribose on Wed, Jul 8 2009 at 12:42PM PDT
Hi, I think there is an incompatibility with MenuMeters. When the processor control is shown on the menu bar, I am no longer able to display the MenuMeters widgets on the menu bar. Does anyone experienced this as well? A restart (maybe just a login/logout) is needed to spot this problem. Kind regards, christian

The 'nap' checkbox doesn't appear in 10.5.8, it seems. Anyone know why?
