Aha. Sorry for that, I was indeed referring to the toolbar. I cannot drag the little plus-icon (on the rightmost side of the tab bar) away.

Please note that customizing the toolbar to something other than the default set will effectively disable GLIMS Search Suggestions feature. The only way to re-enable it, as far as I know, is dragging the default set and restarting Safari 4.

I don't have the stand alone Add Bookmark button in my Customise Toolbar sheet.

On the other hand 1Password- , Cosmopod- and Evernote-buttons stay where I want them.

Great, now we only need a way to restore the old progress bar, a stop/reload button that doesn't require a journey to the other side of your screen and a "close tab" icon that stays visible all the time.

I don't mind the new progress bar or the close tab buttons as they are in the new version, but that Stop/Reload being aaallllll the way over yonder drives me freakin' batty! What the hell were they thinking?

I don't understand why you consider your mouse confined to the left side of the screen? Or that things on one side could somehow be defined as "further away" than things on the left? How much clicking are you doing waaaay over there on the left that it causes that kind of complaint?

Usability. English is written from left to right, top to bottom. This conditions our brain to consider the "beginning" to be in the upper left corner, and the "end" to be the lower right corner.

This is why when you design any sort of printed page whether it be paper or computer screen, your most important items are in the upper left corner, and your least important items are in the lower-right corner. People who find the movement of the stop/start button annoying think so because its placement on the page no longer coincides with its degree of importance in their minds.

Okay, I guess, but I would argue that the history of active mouse space is much more biased to the right side of a page, as that is where the scroll bar is. This has been mitigated by the scroll wheel to some extent, but I'd wager that when people are viewing websites, their mice spend the strong majority of time nearer to the right of the page, either because they're using the bar, or out of habit.

I wasn't even assuming that in my earlier post, though, in which I was assuming that the mouse isn't biased toward any part of the screen at all, which still begs the question Why is it such a pain to have the button in that particular place?

Not at all. The scroll bar is on the right precisely because it is of secondary importance. Reading the page is what you do first. Scrolling the page is what you do second.

Take a look at the rest of your desktop. Where's the Apple menu? What are the first three menu entries in the menu bar for every app? What is the leftmost icon on the dock? Where are the window control buttons located? What order do the tabs appear in your browser? In what order are item listed in the Finder Sidebar? Which side of the window is the sidebar on?

The "top-left is important; bottom-right is unimportant" paradigm is evidenced throughout the entire Mac GUI.

Sure, I think there's some truth to that, but that's not really what I'm getting at, which is that I don't think the average user has his mouse hovering around the top left of the screen while browsing websites. Do you honestly do that?

ephraim, of course most users usually hover over the page, using the two-finger gesture to scroll if on a notebook or a scrolling ball/scroll bars if on a desktop computer.

The real problem here is consistency. The "main" actions of Mac apps are always located in the top left corner. The close/minimize/maximize buttons are there. The navigational buttons are there: back/forward in Finder and Safari; rewind, play/pause and fast forward in iTunes.

So, after some time, you just learn to thrust the cursor top-left when you want to do something about navigation/window control. It just happens without thinking. And then all of a sudden you find that the button you expect to be there is not really there!

The stop/reload button is Safari is navigational because of the semantics of the web. Even in the age of Ajax, most pages don't update their contents automatically (e.g., a newspaper site). So if you want to see the last version, you hit "Reload". You're navigating in time to the last version. Also, intuitively, the stop/reload button is very much like iTunes stop/play button. You just expect it to be there, in the top left corner. That's the real reason some people hate the new button so much. It goes against the consistency.

Absolutely!

The blinking "close tab" buttons are already driving me mad. For example, if you drag a tab and then release it, the button will blink. Sometimes you would just move the cursor to something above the tab bar and the close buttons will flash, because obviously you've hovered over one of the tabs. This is so distracting. This is exactly why hover behaviour is almost never used in the Mac UI. The only way where it's used is the Dock, and you won't trigger it accidentally while reaching for something else, because it's at the edge of the screen.

Why is the reload/stop button on the right, whereas all other buttons are on the left? Why does it use the "glass" style?

The circular indicator doesn't give me any estimate of the page load time. This is especially annoying when loading big PDFs. You're just sitting there and waiting without any estimate to when the loading will complete.

Seriously, what's going on at Apple these days? Who approved these "improvements"? It almost makes you want to write your own browser just to get the usability back.

This works OK for me (apart from the Reload button missing from the left side of the toolbar). But after a relaunch of Safari everything's back to default. Every time. WTF?
