Manually add websites to Safari 4 Beta's Top Sites page Web Browsers
There isn't an obvious way to add sites to Safari 4 Beta's new Top Sites page, but this is a Mac after all, so it occurred to me that drag and drop might work, and it does:
  1. Open the top sites window.
  2. Click the Edit button.
  3. Open the web site you'd like to add to Top Sites in another window.
  4. Drag the want-to-add site's site icon (it appears to the left of the URL) from the URL address bar into the Top Sites window. You can position the site while you're dragging it, too.
  5. Drop the site when it's in the position where you'd like it to stay -- the site will be pinned to this position automatically.
[robg adds: This works as described, making Top Sites much more useful to me; there are sites I like to show on my Speed Dial page in Firefox, for instance, even though I don't visit them all that often.]

Doesn't appear to like RSS feeds. Sad - most of my browsing is done via RSS these days. :(

You can also do this by dragging bookmarks from the safari bookmarks window. This makes it easier if you want to add a lot of sites which are already bookmarked.

You can also do the following:

  1. Click on the Top Sites icon.
  2. Click the Edit button in the lower left corner.
  3. Now, in the address bar, type in the address of the web site you want to be a favorite, but do not press the Enter key.
  4. Drag the favorite icon next to the URL down into the sites, and watch the grid of images rearrange. Put the icon where you want it to show up in the grid of sites.
  5. Once you have where you want it, press the pushpin.
  6. Click Done.
That way, if you know the URL, you can just enter it manually.

Has anyone noticed that none of the Apple Discussion pages can be added to Top Sites. I wanted to add the login page but cannot by any method. I didn't expect to be add a page after logging in to the AD but did think I could add the login page. Nada.

I take it back. After logging in and adding the top page in the discussion area, logged out and back in that page was there but without the log in. Wouldn't do it yesterday. Guess is only works on even numbered days. :)

Great tip that saved me a lot of time. It doesn't seem to work for HTTPS pages though. Not sure why, if an HTTPS page can be bookmarked, and recorded in History, Apple would prevent us from adding it to Top Sites. Weird.

Just tried this. For any page that are unencrypted, i.e. http://, it works great. For secure HTTP pages (https://) you can add it, but you don't get a thumbnail preview. This does not work with local files/pages (say, a site you're working on but don't have in your /Sites folder). No matter how many times I tried dragging a local (in this case, from a folder on a network mounted volume) page into the Top Sites area, it wouldn't take it. It also doesn't seem to work with HTML pages coming out of the /Sites folder, but my Personal Web Sharing is hosed at the moment, so don't take that as gospel.

I'm not sure if this was included in the beta as well, but Safari 4 also lists "Top Sites" in the dropdown when bookmarking a page.
