After installing the software for a Samsung CLP-610 color laser printer, we started having issues with the machine (a PowerMac) crashing at random times. It turns out the hard drive was being filled to capacity with files named 49?????????? in /private/var/tmp. Through a process of elimination, I finally determined the culprit was a Samsung application called SPanel. Renaming this application (located at /Library » Printers » SPanel » Samsung » SPanel.app) resolved the problem.

Hope this helps someone save the very frustrating amount of time I spent tracking this down.

Which OS are you using? I have read that the CLP 610 does not work with Leopard.

Originally running on 10.3.9 when I posted about this problem. After an upgrade to Leopard, I immediately disabled SPanel.app, so I really can't say whether the application works under Leopard. I can tell you the printer works just fine under Leopard without Spanel.app present.

this sounds a little strange, I don't think the /private/var/tmp/462xxx stuff is really a result of Spanel.app - these files contain the temporarily unpacked Printer description files, I have whole bunch of these - some are about 2 years old, but my Spanel.app was only installed few months ago... it might be produced by cups or printer setup utility. Anyway what I found strange is that (at least on Leopard) there seems to be no periodical cleanup of /private/var/tmp.

If you see stuff in tmp that are two years old, the dates are just wrong. The reason there are no clean up tools for tmp is that it is emptied on reboot. I guess you could have tmp with files that old if you have not rebooted in 2 years, but that is not likely.
