Use MobileMe push on iPhone with alternate From address iPhone

This hint is for those who have a primary email address, say a@default.com, and would like to use this email address, but would like the 'push' aspects of their MobileMe account, say a@me.com. It would be useful to be able to send email from a MobileMe account, but have a@default.com show up by default as the From address. This hint is similar to this previously-posted hint, in that one can set their primary email address to forward a copy to their MobileMe account. However, this previous hint does this, but only by subscribing to their MobileMe account as a standard IMAP account, which would not use push.

For this hint, one also needs an additional Gmail account (which may or may not be the primary email address) -- assume this account is a@gmail.com. and one would need to subscribe to that within the iPhone as well. Under the Mail settings for the MobileMe account, change the sent mail server to use smpt.gmail.com instead of the MobileMe sent mail server.

Then, in the Gmail settings page on the web, on the Accounts tab, configure it so that your Gmail account can send mail as a@default.com. (This involves gmail sending an email to a@default.com, confirming that it can send mail as that address). Then after that is added, click on Default next to a@default.com to make that your default sent mail address.

In this way, when one sends mail from the MobileMe account on the iPhone, even though it displays a@me.com as the From address, Gmail's mail server will replace a@me.com with a@default.com, and the receiver will see that in the From address. When replying, the recipient will reply to that email address as well.

If you would rather not change your Gmail settings to use a default alternate From address, you could get an additional Gmail account that only is used for this purpose. This would also be useful, in that you would not get new mail to this alternate Gmail address, which would affect the unread message count of mail on the iPhone. It would obviously be good to set this Gmail account to refresh manually on the iPhone as well, to save battery life.

One extra note: if you don't want the gmail account to even get manually refreshed, you can add it then turn it off.

There is a typo in the last sentence of the second paragraph of this hint. Google's SMTP server is not smpt.gmail.com, it is smtp.gmail.com.

I've been looking for this. Thank you very much. I've always had Gmail set up to use my own email address on my iPhone, but never even thought to use Gmail as the SMTP server on MobileMe. It was literally turning on Gmail and off MobileMe in the MobileMe settings to make it work perfectly.

A word of warning on this if you are in a corporate environment. Gmail *does* allow you to set the From:, but it also sets a Sender: header. What that means is that people in Outlook (and other similar products) will see something like this:

a@gmail.com on behalf of a@default.com

Obviously, this might not be ideal in your situation. Another option is to sign up for a service that won't set the Sender: header. There are a number of such services out there. I use (but am in no way affiliated with) Fusemail (fusemail.com).

The moral of the story is that you don't have to use MobileMe's SMTP server. You can use any SMTP server you choose, while still taking advantage of the push capabilities for incoming mail.

A great hint but this then obviously prevents you from using your Gmail labels etc I believe. I just wish there was a way to gain push through gmail without compromising my organizational setup.

This hint works great on the Mac but if you sync it to your iPhone you will not be able to send e-mail on-the-go from any account other than your username@mac.com address. =(

Also, I do not sync my mail accounts between my computer and iPhone. I setup each mail account individually on each device.

Keep in mind that Gmail won't replace the "me.com" address in the From field if you've added your MobileMe account as an alias in Gmail.

This doesn't really work anymore under 2.1 (I'm assuming). You can set it up to get yahoo and use your other addresses, but the iPhone will not let you do it without also getting your regular account mail. I have 3 Gmail accounts (plain ol gmail, and 2 hosted by Google Apps).

1) If I delete the password from my gmail account, that account cannot send maiL (its SMTP password is removed too)
2) If an SMTP server username matches a mail account, it is linked to that account (therefore invoking #1)
3) If I make an account inactive or I delete it, that address is not selectable as the From address
3.5) Even if there's a separate SMTP entry for it still in the list of servers
4) Yahoo's SMTP server cannot be deleted or turned Off, so it can't fall back on one of your other configured SMTP servers.

I think there's more, but if I keep thinking about it, my iPhone will end up embedded in a wall.

It works fine in 2.1. Add your gmail account, then turn it off (as per the first comment). Then use it as the sent mail server for yahoo. It will still display your yahoo address in the from field, but when it actually gets sent, gmail will behind the scenes (on the server side) change your gmail address to your yahoo address. It works perfectly.

How? As far as I can tell, you cannot use anything but Yahoo's SMTP in a yahoo account (I cannot disable or delete the yahoo smtp server), so it will ostensibly never use any other SMTP server (unless maybe Yahoo is down at the time).

For the record, my regular accounts were setup on the Mac and synced, not created on the iPhone.

in settings for mail, select your yahoo account, account info, smtp, turn on your gmail under other smtp servers, and turn off the yahoo one.

I cannot turn off or delete the the yahoo SMTP Server. It just ignores the action. I've enabled several alternatives.
