My company uses Exchange, and hearing Apple chime on about Exchange support started to get under my skin after my first few unsuccessful attempts at getting it to work.

What I didn't realize is that Apple has SSL enabled by default. And since my company does not use SSL for Exchange, the verification process will always fail despite the Domain, Mail Server, and other settings from the configure new account screen being correct. The solution is to just save the broken settings, and then manually edit the account and disable SSL.

I hope that, in a future revision, Apple fixes the auto-detect settings that Entourage supports, or at least gives access to all settings from the Configure Account screen.

I strongly recommend against using any email account over WiFi unencrypted.

In addition, I would also say one shouldn't be using any business email via non-SSL connections. It is just bad form, insecure, and quite frankly this whole SSL for email thing was figured out a LONG time ago.

While the OP is correct that Apple probably should check for non-SSL connectivity, really they should go to their IT department about fixing the huge glaring security hole in their email system.

If Apple does allow autodetection of non-SSL Exchange accounts, I think they should pop up a message if that is the only way to connect. Something like "Hey, we can do this, but it is unsecure and a really really bad idea. Call your IT folks and tell them to get with the program!"

The IT department needs to be beaten over the head repeatedly with heavy blunt objects. NO remote email access in this day and age should be handled over non encrypted connections, especially wireless.

Using OWA without SSL is a really BAD IDEA.

I'd probably not use it at all.

Most forget that the OWA credentials are the same as Active Directory, so if someone gets them, they can get into your entire environment.

SSL certs are really cheap these days, even if you don't want to pay Go Daddy $20 a year for one, there are some you can get for free or self sign your own.

It is just too easy to setup and too much of a risk to not have one.

Yikes!

Bad news not to be using SSL with Outlook Web Access, which is how the iPhone/iPod Touch connect to an exchange account. At a minimum, use a self signed certificate using SelfSSL, or pay a very small yearly fee for one.

We had the same problem at my company. However I discovered that if you use the iPhone Configuration Utility you can set up profiles with SSL turned off. Then use that profile to download to the phone. This would really only be useful if you have a lot of phones you need to configure, otherwise it's probably a little much for just a couple of phones.
