10.5: Switch Spaces via gestures on newer laptops Laptop Macs
If you find yourself switching Spaces frequently and use a laptop with multi-touch capability, you can use MultiClutch to map gestures to Spaces commands.

First (and the order is important) disable any keyboard shortcuts you use for Spaces. Then go into MultiClutch and add (in the Global application) Swipe gestures to the key commands you want for Spaces up/down/left/right. Finally, set those key commands in the Exposé and Spaces pane. This lets you "sweep away" your old space with a single gesture (no finger juggling), kind of Minority Report-style.

One caveat: although this overrides most applications' built-in three-finger gestures, it doesn't override the Finder's back/forward support, so you get stuck sometimes when a Finder window is in the foreground. Just choose another app, and you're on your way.

I cannot switch between spaces if a space is empty. When I switch to a empty space it get´s stuck in the space that has no app running. Any idea on that?

Probably because when you switch to an "empty" space, you're switched to the Finder. See the warning about the Finder in the hint.

So basically if there is a space with no app you have to manually choose an app to get back to Multiclutch. Kinda downs the purpose of being able to switch between spaces using the touchpad :)

I'm not sure how it works, but a few hours after setting up multiclutch, the desktop issue fixes itself. It stops working again on reboot, but again, work for a while and it will fix itself. This could just be a quirk with my configuration, and as MultiClutch isn't open-source (hint hint, Will Henderson) I have no idea what's going on.

At any rate, another workaround is to put an empty TextEdit window (or any non-Finder window) on any blank desktops.

Question on spaces in general
Authored by: SOX on Tue, Jul 15 2008 at 9:49AM PDT
In the virtualscreen Spaces, how does one first see and then optionally consolidate all the windows of an application to one of the screens.

I get terminal windows open on various spaces and then lose them behind other apps. the best I've been able to figure out is to press f8 (spaces) then f9 (see all windows), this shows all windows in all spaces simultaneously. I then move them one by one. Oddly the intuitive thing of pressing f8 then f10 (to see just a single applications windows) does not seem to work analogously. F10 just overrides F8.

what I was hoping was perhaps by option clicking I could gather all the windows of an app into a single space.

is there a way to do this?

It isn't exactly what you're looking for, but you could try setting all Terminal windows to appear only on a single space, using the Spaces & Expose prefpane.
