Make the Snap Links add-on work with Firefox 3 Web Browsers
I couldn't wait any longer for the Firefox add-on Snap Links to be updated for Firefox 3, so I changed the supported version number myself to make it work.

On your Mac, assuming you've installed Snap Links, quit Firefox and navigate to your user's Library » Application Support » Firefox » Profiles » [random].default » extensions » snaplinks@snaplink.net folder. In that folder, open install.rdf in a text editor. Change the MaxVersion number from 3.0beta number to just 3.0 and save the file. Now launch Firefox, and Snap Links should appear in the addon list as available now.

[robg adds: I hadn't installed Snap Links before, but was able to find an installable version for Firefox 3 on the Snap Links Version History page. I just installed the 0.0.4 version listed there, and it's working fine with my Firefox 3.0 installation. There are also some links in the comments to the plug-in to pre-modified versions, if you'd rather not edit the code yourself.]

I Tried to alter the version number in the Windows Version on vista and xp, but wouldn't take. Firefox refuses to notice the install.RDF changes of the file, so no availability of the plugin.

Using the unsupported compatibility line add will allow install of the .4 version, but when restarted will be unavailable again unless you change the version history. Firefox's extension update check is a picky one.

In FF2, I could never make Snap Links work correctly. That is, releasing the mouse button would not cause the selected links to open. The only way to get links to open was to drag the mouse outside the firefox window. This is the case on various Macs at home and at work.

Do others see the same problem? And if so, is it still a problem in FF3?

fixed for xp. download the .xpi file and decopress it with stuffit expander, the folder will have the four items in it, just edit the install.rtf file. change the version number from 0.0.4, add a .1 to it such as 0.0.4.1. and change the max version to 3.0 and no beta numbers. save it and find the snaplink@snaplinks folder in xp/vista and replace these four files with the corrected ones, should be available and working fine. I tested(on xp) and does work correctly now. Don't have a vista machine to test on so :P

no the hint works for mac and windows, but the process is somewhat different for XP. Somehow it won't see the update to the install file. So a workaround was needed.

Just install either Nightly Tester Tools or MR Tech Toolkit - both of them extensions provide means of forcing compatibility. No need to find the extension from the depths of the profile folder and mess with Install.rdf (one typo and it will go wonky....) nor other tinkering (although I like it that way:).
