Avoid repetitive repagination in long Word documents Apps
I write long structured documents using Word for Mac. One of my big gripes has been how Word seems to repaginate every time you look at it funny, and how long it takes to do that repagination on long documents. I am a heavy user of styleref fields to automatically generate text for me.

On a hunch, I removed the styleref entry I was using in the footer, and simply typed the text in directly. My 370 page document now repaginates in less than two seconds, compared to the thirty seconds it was taking before. So, on the odd chance that anyone else might be suffering the same issue, I thought I'd pass on what worked for me.

Now we just need to have Excel not stink with Pivot tables.

If you are writing long structured documents, can I suggest that you look at DocBook? You might (or might not) find it more convenient than Word. It frees you entirely from worrying about how the document will look when you are editing it, and does cross-references and generated content very well. There is perhaps a bit of a learning curve though - especially if the supplied stylesheets are not to your taste.

My favourite editor for doing DocBook is XMLMind XML Editor.

The purpose of writing is writing, not programming.

Because, as I stated previously, the purpose of writing is writing, not programming. Any tool that makes me waste time worrying about markup tags is worthless.
