I discovered this tonight. If you initiate a search in the Finder (Command-F) from a folder (other than your user's home folder), the Search criteria shows This Mac and the name of the current directory as search locations. If you press Command-F again, the current directory choice is replaced with your user's Home folder.

This hint is not quite correct. When I press Command-F the second time I am taken to my startup volume. I think the setting depends on the Finder Preferences and what you have "New Finder windows open:" set to. Mine is set to "Computer" and since "This Mac" means "Computer" my guess is the second Command-F is translated to the startup volume.

When I changed my Finder Preference to have new Finder windows open onto my Home folder, my result corresponded to this hint.

If you look closely at the line just under the toolbar where the file list will be, you will see a subtle change from the first Command-F to the second Command-f.

The first Command-f shows:
Search: This Mac {folder you were in before the command-f} | Contents File Name

The second Command-f shows:
Search: This Mac {user folder name} | Contents File Name

That's the only change, when you first hit Command-f, if you "Computer" checked in your sidebar, you will see your Computer highlighted. This stays this way when you hit the Command-f a second time.

It's not obvious, but if you watch the window closely when you hit Command-f once then twice, you will see the difference.

Cool tip! What I want to know is how to make it search the folder I'm in automatically without resorting to click the button with my mouse :/

Yes that is what is really needed! I've been trying to figure that out. The currect folder was the default under Tiger but in Leapord they switched to "This Mac". Seems like the wrong default to me...

One that used to get me was searching by filename esp for remote volumes. Holding the shift key down while pressing command F starts that for you, still haven't found a way around clicking the current directory button however.

I search a rather large Scripts folder fairly often for bits and pieces, but this script could be easily modified to search anywhere: 
tell application "Finder"
	activate
	set {Btn, toFind} to {button returned, text returned} of (display dialog "Enter the word(s) to find in Scripts." default answer "" buttons {"Cancel", "In Content", "In File Name"} default button "In Content" with icon 1) -- will find File names from "In Content".
	open (path to scripts folder from user domain)
end tell
-- Now GUI script that window for a search.
delay 0.5 -- wait for the Finder to get on with it.
tell application "System Events" to tell process "Finder"
	set value of text field 1 of group 1 of tool bar 1 of window "Scripts" to toFind
	delay 0.5 -- wait for Sys Events to get to the right place before clicking.
	click radio button 2 of radio group 1 of group 1 of group 1 of splitter group 1 of window 1
	if Btn contains "File" then click radio button 2 of radio group 2 of group 1 of group 1 of splitter group 1 of window 1

Cmmd Shift F lets you search by Name Contains, but you are still doing a Contents search. Why this instead of switching to a File Name search? It seems like the results would be the same, but a Contents search would potentially be slower.

They are not the same. If you search for "test" raw query for Name contains is (((kMDItemDisplayName = "*test*"cd))) && (true), while for Filename is ((true) && (true)) && ((kMDItemDisplayName = "test*"cdw)). The former gets 251 results in my home directory, the latter 165. The difference (I think) is the filename search only gets matches at the beginning of a word, so, e.g., "25 Greatest Sun Recordings" shows up in the Name search but not in the Filename search.

Just to be clear, even though "Contents" is highlighted the "Name contains" search is not a search of contents. Also, "Name matches" seems to be the same as the Filename search.

Hmm, strange enough this tip does not work on my 10.5.2 system. Maybe due to the fact that I have reversed Command-F with Shift-Command-F so that "search for name" is the default?

Nevertheless, if now somebody would find out how to tweak the standard columns in the spotlight result window, live would be nearly as good as in Tiger times ;-)
