10.5: How to 'wrap around' the Command-Tab switcher System 10.5
I had grown accustomed to using Command-Tab and the Right- or Left-Arrow keys to switch apps in 10.4, but that functionality changed a little in 10.5.

In 10.4, holding the Command key, tapping Tab, then using the Left Arrow twice, one could get the end of a (potentially long) list of running apps -- the first Left Arrow press would select the 'previously used' application (the leftmost icon in the Command-Tab bar), and the next Left Arrow press would jump to the icon at the far right of the Command-Tab bar. Basically, if the leftmost app icon was highlighted, hitting the Left Arrow would highlight the app at the right end of the list, and vice versa. 10.5 doesn't allow this wraparound feature; pressing Left Arrow with the leftmost icon highighted does nothing at all.

The solution? It was hidden in this older hint: after pressing Command-Tab, release Tab (still holding down Command) and then press the backtick/tilde key (above Tab on the US keyboard -- this key may differ in other regions of the world). The backtick/tilde key, along with the Tab key, doesn't care about the new "hard stop" at the left edge of the Command-Tab switcher, and will jump across that boundary to the rightmost application icon.

[robg adds: As noted in the original hint, you can also press the End key to jump to the rightmost entry in the Command-Tab switcher (and Home to get to the lefmost entry). I don't know why they blocked the wrapping of the arrow keys, whether it's a bug or a feature. If it's a feature, expect that the Command-` shortcut will also stop working this way in a future update.]

Exactly what I was going to say. It's always amusing to see these overcomplicated hints when an extremely simple and (I would think) obvious solution exists.

on 10.4 with a (swiss-)german keyboard, it's the "<>" key (located left of the "y") which does this single-key-reverse.
more convenient than shift-tab while holding command, i can tell you.
i don't have 10.5 to verify this, but couldn't you just type and hold command-tab to zip through the list of apps to the end? or will this wrap as it does in 10.4?
also, "h" hides the selected application while in command-tab mode, which i use quite often and haven't seen mentioned in this thread.

I've been using comand-tilde since I switched in 2003; I never knew about the arrow keys!

That said, if they take away command-tilde's ability to wrap around, I think I'm going to need a good application switcher. I'll be pretty ticked off.

How did you guys feel when they got rid of your arrow-key method? Was it disruptive to your work habit?

Use the "fn" key if you're on a laptop, and you'll be able to use the arrows as you wish!

Agreed. I can't stand the basic one provided by Apple. LiteSwitch runs circles around it.

wholeheartedly agree with that!

Liteswitch has a nice sub-menu on the bar and awesome hotkeys. Hitting "F" twice will force quit an application, etc. The placement and size is also chageable.

There's actually too much to mention. Just check it out:

I hit command-tab and click on the icon of the app I want to view - seems to work best for me when I'm not in keyboard-only mode.

Maybe I am misunderstanding the problem, but holding down "Command" and tapping the "Tab" key cycles through all open Apps as many times as you want it to. Tapping the "Q" over the highlighted App will also Quit.

Totally_

+Tab goes to the Right and wraps back to the Left when you reach the end_

+Shift+Tab goes to the Left and wraps back to the Right when you reach the end_

This has been the case since the mid Ninties at least [just don't remember details further back]_ Same functionality and everything_

I have always used Command-Shift-Tab, almost as second nature (I often hit Command-Tab, Command-Shift-Tab to bring all the windows of the front app to the front). I never knew about the ~ option. That is much easier. Thanks
