10.5: Install a German-American translation dictionary System 10.5

I wrote a plug-in for the Mac OS X 10.5 Dictionary that provides the complete German-English dictionary from the well-known dict.cc site for offline use. You can read more about the plug-in -- and download it -- in this blog entry on my site.

The plug-in provides access to the German-American dictionary in Dictionary itself, and other core OS X services like Spotlight and the Dictionary widget. You can use this to help translate web pages, etc. The tool itself is open source, but the vocabulary data itself is not, as explained in dict.cc's Terms of Use.

To use the plug-in, run the installer package, then launch Dictionary and open its preferences. Check the box for the dict.cc dictionary, and you're good to go.

I don't suppose anyone knows of a way of getting the dictionary to work with UK spellings? Maybe there's an American to English translator out there??

Is dict.cc part of dict.org online dictionary effort? I am asking this because if that is so, the dict.cc format has to be the same to any other dict.org dictionary and then the plug-in can be used for other languages.

I would like a Spanish, Italian, etc... versions of this plug-in, so if it is just a matter of "putting in" a different language file fron the dict.org files I would be wiling to do/try it.

Update display label to something more friendly

Althought I'm sure 'dict.cc' means something to folks familiar with the project (which is very cool by the way), I was looking for something a little more friendly. I found that after installing the German English plug-in and then launching the Dictionary App, and going to the preferences (in Leopard, I'm not sure about Tiger) you will be able to Edit the "label" which changes the display name. I changed 'dict.cc' to 'Deutsch-English'.

However, I haven't been able to figure out how to change the display name in the Dictionary Widget. If anyone has that figured out, please post the hint.

German Thesaurus, too

There is also a free German thesaurus available from this site. Apple has a download page for it as well. The installer which is built into the dictionary file is apparently broken in 10.6, so you just have to drag and drop the dictionary into either /Library/Dictionaries/ or ~/Library/Dictionaries/. Other than that, it seems to work great!
