I found I'm much faster when I just type ".de" or ".ch" or ".net" instead of waiting until the menu shows up and selecting the right entry...

I had no idea about either of those tips; the holding keys down, or the holding the .com button down.

Initially, the .com tip didn't work, but I found I had to set my keyboard to "English (UK)" despite having bought by iPhone in the UK.

I too did not know either of these tricks.................where did you learn about the letters showing other variations of the letters? Just curious as I thought I knew almost all the tricks on the Iphone!

I was actually wondering why the US English keyboard doesn't have .net and .org as pop-up alternatives. I expected to find it there after discovering all the variations in other characters (these are quite rich, even on the US keyboard). Would be nice to see that added in a future firmware update.

Perhaps this only works with European input modes. The US English mode will only do .com, and the Japanese input mode doesn't even have a .com button (although that makes sense, as you wouldn't want to type URLs in Japanese ... the technology to support Unicode URLs exists, but is not widely deployed yet).
