New poll on drive space posted Site News
As I was doing some (digital) housecleaning this weekend, I wondered about drive space in general -- how much do we all have? So I figured I'd post a hard drive capacity poll to see how much storage space the typical macosxhints.com reader has at their disposal.

The only restriction is that the drives must be used in some way with your Macs, so don't count those 25 full-size external SCSI drives you've got stored away in the closet, just in case "SCSI might make a comeback someday!"

Personally, when I tallied it all up, I was surprised to find we've got over 3TB of storage space here across all our Macs...

4 Macs, total of 4 TB, where one old G4 MDD has three TB of disks. 5 Internal, took out both DVD-burners, and two external. It is connected through Gigabit and serves headless TV-shows, movies, backups and music for the house.

It is amazing how much drive space has accumulated and how little it costs:

Mac Pro 8 core - 4 750G internals, 10 750 G eSATA, 4 250G firewire = 11.5 TB

G5 dual core - 500G interal

Linux box (used only as media server for macs) 10 750G internal = 7.5TB

Linux Box 2( also file server) 120G

Mini 1 (TV) = 80G internal 1 750 G external FW = .82 T

Mini 2 (TV) = 80G internal 3 x 750G FW, 2 x 500G FW = 3.3T

Apple TV - 40G internal

Mac book AIR = 64G SSD

Mac Book Pro 120G internal, Powerbook 12" 60G internal

2 160G Ipods, 4 80G ipods, 1 60G ipod

iBook 60G

So it looks like just shy of 24 TB

Thats what happens when you have 500 DVDs ripped and 6000 CD ripped as flac.

So you're asking, "Who's got the biggest one?" The results may be interesting, but they're certainly not going to represent the typical macosxhints.com reader. How many of us with something to brag about will take the poll? How many of us with puny little stock drives will?

No, you're reading the question as "who's got the biggest one." The question I asked was simply about total drive space, without any implied commentary of 'bigger is better' or 'small hard drives are for wimps.' I was just curious what the equipment mix looked like among readers.

And judging by the response curve, lots of people at all ranges are responding.

Though I counted about 1.6 TB of hard drive space, more than 75 percent of that was devoted to redundant backup, including Time Machine and bootable duplicate hard drives stored off-site and rotated in for use. So while that may seem like a lot of free space, the actual usable amount of storage for data is only around 400 GB.
