10.5: Prevent vanishing windows after disabling Spaces System 10.5
When Mac OS 10.5 Leopard was released, I eagerly tried using Spaces, and assigned several apps to different windows. After a while, I disabled Spaces as I just didn't use it that much.

Then I noticed that sometimes application windows would vanish, and even if I selected them from the Window menu, they would not reappear -- similar to what is discussed in this hint, except in my case, Spaces was disabled. This is due to a known Spaces bug.

I realized that to prevent this from recurring, I just had to re-enable Spaces temporarily, empty the list of applications with assigned windows, and then disable Spaces. Perhaps obvious, but perhaps useful to somebody.

I've had vanishing Firefox windows since turning off spaces; Firefox had its own window in Spaces, so I'm hoping this fixes things!

This has been mostly resolved in the update OS 10.5.2, although it has occurred twice for me using Spaces in the past three weeks with this update.

If you want to use Spaces and some strange behavior occurs, using the Control-arrow or Control-number (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4) key combination will switch to another Space and returning to the original Space will refresh the vanished window.

Note that when the application windows disappear from the space in which you are using a program, hiding and then bringing the program back to the front solves the issue most of the time.

My experience is that the problem may be linked to when program notifications pop up in a different space than the one program is located in. For example you have Firefox in space 1 and are using a different app or even just hanging out in space 2, if an alert from Fx is issued it pops up in the active space (2). Dismissing the alert in the split space environment of an app confuses Leopard, which then displays the erratic hidden app syndrom.

I've found that tying "killall Dock" in the Terminal sometimes gets my windows back.
