10.5: Working with Windows workgroups in 10.5 Network
I have been struggling with browsing Windows workgroups in 10.5.x. Hints on these forums fixed the workgroup name sticking, but when trying to connect to the Samba share on my print server, OS X wouldn't display the workgroup name. Although SharePoints no longer works in Leopard, I had used it previously to set an OS X Mac to be the Workgroup Master Browser to reduce the number of elections in a Windows 2000/XP network.

With nothing left to lose, I fired up SharePoints, set the workgroup name (on the SMB Properties tab), and set the Mac to be the master browser. Problem solved.

You can actually set the workgroup name with Leopard itself. Open System Preferences, Network. Select your Network Device (actually I don't think it matters which one since it should be a global setting, also I haven't testet it). Press Advanced and select the WINS tab.
There you can set your Workgroup name, as well as the NetBios name. It does not offer the option to act as master browser. But it worked in my case.
