Stream internet radio directly on Apple TV Take 2 Other Hardware
A friend wanted to be able to play internet radio on his Apple TV. So I tried the first idea I had and amazingly it works. I've tried this on my Apple TV 2.0.; I'm not sure if it works with the first-gen Apple TV's, however. S here's how to get your favorite internet radio stations to stream through your Apple TV:
  1. In iTunes, go to your favorite radio station under Radio, drag it to a new playlist. (I then added a regular song just in case, but it'll probably work without doing this.) If you're getting your internet radio from the web, use the Advanced menu to Open Stream, then copy that to your playlist.
  2. Add as many radio stations you want to the playlist.
  3. Make sure this new playlist syncs with your Apple TV.
  4. On your Apple TV, navigate to the new "radio" playlist you made.
  5. Select the stream you want to play and you're ready to go. I turned off my Mac for a sec just to make sure it wasn't getting the music from there -- it's been switching to different songs as I write this, so I'm pretty sure it works.
[robg adds: We covered radio station playlists in this hint, but never the use of streaming radio stations directly on an Apple TV.]

That's odd... doesn't work at all on my end (using 2.0). I get a message saying "Playlist doesn't contain any songs". If I add a normal song to the Radio playlist that's the only one that shows up in the menu: no streams at all.

The playlist is synced just as the hint says. Not sure what I'm doing wrong...

Off topic but does anyone know if this will work with an iPhone?

this will only work on the initial sync/stream with itunes on the syncing machine (at least for me!) after installing 2.0.

i've had many stations on a playlist for a long time now. when i updated i was pleased to find them on my appleTV. however, since i've had to reboot the ATV a few times or close itunes on my mac pro, ATV no longer reconizes the radio streams. :(

there is a very long thread in the ATV forums at apple about this subject. seems there are a number of bugs that need to be worked out of 2.0.

if this is not the case for you (your radio streams are always recognized) consider yourself lucky!

Guess I wasn't one of the 'lucky' ones. After spending way too much time with Take 2 trying to get internet radio streaming to work, I opted for a $25 solution...Airfoil - 3.1...which works perfectly. My question is, why can't the guys who built Apple's software package do as well?

Not sure you needed Airfoil though.... the new airtunes function DOES work with streaming radio by sending iTunes audio to ATV - although it's not as nice as being able to browse stations directly from the television...

For this to work, you need the latest iTunes (7.6+), and maybe even 10.5.1+

In 10.5.2, Radio Stations now also work in Front Row. At last!
