Speed up MBA System installation Laptop Macs
To speed up system installation on the MacBook Air, create a disk image (in Disk Utility) of the Air's Install disks (both of them), and save them locally on your DVD-equipped Mac. Spit out the real DVDs, and open both the disk images. The Remote Install Mac OS X application (in Utilities) can serve these to the MacBook Air much faster than directly from the DVD. As an example, a full install took about 15 minutes, instead of the normal hour for a fresh install using the DVDs.

I also used the ethernet cable on the MBA, and connected it straight into the Ethernet port of the Mac that was serving. That machine was connected to the net by AirPort, so I set the 'Share Internet Connection' optionto "from AirPort to Ethernet" on that box, so that the MacBook Air pulled files from it directly. Woooosh!

To REALLY Speed up MBA System installation

1) Get rid of the bloatware wasting your HD.
2) Sell your other Macs.
3) Take the extra coins and buy (a) USB powered drive, like one of the new LaCies (handy for large music libraries); and (b) an Apple MBA USB superdrive.

Just attach the USB drive to your MBA and presto! that will REALLY speed up the install.

Apple sells an Ethernet-USB adapter for the MBA for about $25.

Well, this will speed up ANY Mac OS X install, be it MBA or other. If the OS X Install DVD is cloned to a HD (or as here, a DMG mounted) it runs Much faster.
Does it come as any surprise to people that the HD is ways faster than the DVD drive????

But you will need a new .11n AirPort Extreme base to see this speed increase.. :-)

Also, note: If you have 10.5.2 on your 'old' Mac, you can use Migration Assistant to transfer your stuff over to the new MBA.. just as if it was in Target Mode over FireWire!

Works for ANYTHING

The real tip here is imaging a disk to an actual disk drive. Reading a disk from a hard drive vs a player is way faster. Try using MacTheRipper then Handbrake for the encode vs using handbrake for the encode to the disk reading from he DVD.

P.S. Rob - yeah you just want to play with a MBA. What happened to MW's review unit.
