More a tip than a hint: When the Microsoft Office 2008 installer tells you to shut down other running applications before installing, listen to its advice.

I just installed Office 2008 and threw caution to the wind by leaving Safari open (I had a page open with an unsubmitted form that I didn't want to lose). After the installer finished, Safari seemingly lost the ability to display a significant number of consonants when rendering sans-serif fonts.

Not exactly a system melt down, but it made Safari strangely unusable until I rebooted.

[robg adds: As a counterpoint, I left tons of stuff running while I installed Office 2008, and didn't seem to have any font-related issues.]

Immediately after installing Office, go to Font Book (or whatever font manager you're using) and eliminate conflicting fonts. Microsoft installs a bunch of fonts, many of which probably conflict with fonts you've already got. These conflicts can cause all sorts of display problems!

This happened to me. I restarted safari, and voila, everything worked.

Same happened to me, I just moved all of the Microsoft fonts someplace else. And Office doesn't complain at all about the missing fonts...

Indeed, like to avoid problems with "OpenType ligatures" in Safari, as explained in Display Arabic correctly In Safari.

All of my systems were a mess when I finished the install. I actually had to clear the system font caches to completely fix the display issues.

I have run into these problems. I installed Office and didn't quit all my apps. Now I am very frustrated and can't determine how to resolve this issue.

But now I don't know how to fix the problem. Here's what I've done:

1) Used a utility to wipe out all my font caches
2) Validated all fonts in FontBook and removed any fonts that showed as problematic; primarily these were duplicates.

What else can I do?
