Easily charge the iPhone on an unpaired Mac iPhone
I found it very annoying to have to go through the whole "this iPhone is synced with another computer..." business every time I plugged in my iPhone to charge at my desktop (it normally is paired with my laptop), or my computer at work.

But I discovered -- inadvertently -- how to prevent this from happening: just use set a passcode in your iPhone settings screen. Then, when you plug it in, iTunes will give you a single dialogue letting you know it can't connect until you enter the code. Dismiss the dialogue, and you've got a charge-only setup.

Good tip. If the unpaired machine happens to be a laptop, I've found it will also charge if the laptop is on with the lid shut.

I just use a firewire cable. It provides power, but no data. These seems to be in good supply in my junk drawer. I've also seen them from time to time as low as $5.

Or....you could just uncheck "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" and it won't even open iTunes when you connect the phone.

Also, there is the option of holding down the command and option keys while connecting your phone (that will cause iTunes to open but will disable automatic syncing).

Further, I've found that if you hold down the option key when connecting your phone, iTunes will automatically start up but will throw up that dialogue window about choosing an iTunes library. If you simply hit the Quit button in that window, you've got your phone connected with minimal interference from iTunes.
