As you may know, you can auto-quit the printer driver when printing is over, so that the icon won't remain in your Dock.

However, in my case, this never worked. At least until now, when (for independent reasons) I changed the Default Printer pop-up in the Print & Fax panel of System Preferences to Last Printer Used. Bingo! My printer icon now quits the Dock when printing is finished!

That's fine, except my default printer was already set to "Last Printer Used", and my printer (a Canon iP5000) has never auto-quit. So maybe that's not it...

I had mine already set to last printer used as the default and it still does not quit automatically. This probably is not the reason why it doesn't auto-quit. In Tiger my printer always auto-quit.

Switched to 'last used' but it won't quit anyhow.

I think there is a real bug in this feature because it does not auto quit all the time, even if your default printer is set to Last Printer Used.

You will have to go to Print & Fax system preferences panel to remove the printer and add it again. Then the auto-quit starts working again.

None of the fixes work for me. Even new printers that I add don't auto quit.

My printer was already set to 'Auto Quit' and the Default was set to 'Last Printer Used' and the Printer app would not automatically close after printing.

I toggled the Default setting to my specific printer and then back to 'Last Printer Used' and I selected 'Hide completed jobs' (Printer App -> menubar -> Jobs -> Hide Completed Jobs) from within the Printer application and it works now. HTH

I tried some of the fixes listed here with no success. Later I right-clicked the printer icon while it was open in the dock and what should I see in the contextual menu, but an "Auto-Quit" option. I selected it and my printer now acts like I want it to.
