When viewing an Open or Save dialog in column view mode, try a control-click on the column separator at the bottom of a column to get the choices of Right Size this Column, Right Size All Columns Individually, or Right Size All Columns Equally. Each does what you would expect.

[robg adds: Very oddly, you won't find this contextual menu in the Finder, only in the Open/Save dialogs.]

So pretty much the same as double clicking or option double clicking the column sizer then.

Well, that's two of the options, anyway.

Works in 10.4, too (at least in 10.4.11, haven't tried earlier)

Is there a way to tell all finder windows and dialogs to always "right size" the columns?

In finder (10.5.1) you can Command+double click on the column separator to have them expand to show the longest name of the folder/file names.

Just double-clicking the column sizer will "Right Size This Column" and option-double-clicking will "Right Size All Columns Equally," but I don't think there's an equivalent for "Right Size All Columns Individually," nor is there an option to always "Right Size" columns automatically when you navigate to them (I wish there was, too).

I just tried these tricks.
In my case, option-double-clicking did "Right Size All Columns Individually" instead of Equally.
I wonder why...?

I made the mistake of Cmd-Option-doubleclicking the separator in a Finder window and now I can't undo that setting -- every new window opens up with enormously wide columns. I've tried dragging the separators to the widths I want and closing the window, but that change doesn't stick. Any suggestions?
