I love my Logitech MX510 multi-button mouse, but it has a drawback: to use all the nifty buttons on it, you have to use the Logitech Control Center (or pony up for USB Overdrive). While the most recent version (2.4.0 as of this writing) of LCC no longer uses the controversial Unsanity APE, it's not bug-free. In particular, if I unplug my mouse after putting my Mac to sleep, the system won't wake up -- a power-button reset is my only option.

The obvious cure is to unplug before sleep, but I have a habit of doing things in the opposite order. The following AppleScript reminds me to do first things first:

display dialog "Remove mouse before sleep" with icon caution
tell application "Finder" to sleep

I use Butler to trigger this with a hotkey, but any technique to launch an AppleScript will work.

In addition to USB Overdrive, there is also ControllerMate, which I find far superior.

I recommend avoiding Logitech Control Center crashes by avoiding Logitech Control Center, at any cost.

How can this be considered a *fix*? Instead of installing an Input Manager (APE) without notifying the user, LCC now crashes so hard it forces a power-key restart, just from unplugging the mouse at the wrong time?!

Perhaps this hint should just read, "Avoid Logitech's software". Or, "Testing is a fine thing, try it some time."

If you can remember to hit a hot key to remind you to unplug the mouse, where does that get you? Or did I miss something?

The hotkey is to sleep the computer. The reminder is just triggered first. If you close your MacBook lid, it's no help.

Apparently, Logitech uses a special flavour of USB for its mice. While regular USB is hotplug, meaning you can plug and unplug peripherals without first shutting down your computer, Logitech's version is known as ‘cold-dead-plug'.
