10.5: Quick Look inside variety of compressed archives System 10.5
I was happy to see this hint about Quick Look support for examining the contents of zip files. However, since I do a lot of my work back and forth with *nix users, most of my compressed archives are gzipped or bzipped tarballs.

I was directed to the free BetterZip Quick Look Generator. This Quick Look Generator will examine the contents of ZIP, TAR, GZip, BZip2, ARJ, LZH, ISO, CHM, CAB, CPIO, RAR, 7-Zip, DEB, RPM, StuffIt's SIT, DiskDoubler, BinHex, and MacBinary files. And as noted, it's free!

[robg adds: While this is mentioned in the comments to the referenced hint, given that this plug-in really handles most types of compressed files, I felt it was a unique enough Quick Look plug-in to merit a hint of its own. This plug-in is apparently based on features in macitbetter's $19.95 BetterZip, which allows you to extract single files from archives, search within archives, create them via drag and drop, and much more -- I'd not heard of it before, but it's now on my Pick of the Week to-be-looked-at list (and yes, PotW will return, once the rush of Leopard hints slows down a bit!).]

Rob,

If your going to review BetterZip, also take a look at Springy (www.springyarchiver.com). Being a recent Mac convert, I was looking for something similar to Windows WinZip and I looked into both BetterZip and Springy. Both are good programs (...but I purchased Springy)

Springy does not seem like a quick look tool. Did I too quickly look at the web site documentation?

The hint above on BetterZip says "I was directed to the free BetterZip Quick Look Generator." Am I missing a free variant, or is it just free for the first 30 days?

I was referring to Rob's comment that BetterZip may be a PotW, not the quickviewer program

The link is to a Quick Look Generator. The stuff on the side of the page about purchasing and the 30-day trial is for the BetterZip software. The Quick Look Generator is free as in beer.

The link in "robg adds:" is to BetterZip, the comment in "robg adds:" is referring to BetterZip being on his Pick of the Week to-be-looked-at list, my comment is that Springy is better than BetterZip. (I'm not commenting of the Quick Look plug-in)

Lifehacker is reporting on some quick look plug-ins for folders and archives from a Japanese programmer. His site is at http://homepage.mac.com/xdd/.

The free BetterZip quick look plug-in is really nice. While I was testing it, I realized if you had a quick look preview showing, then used your mouse to highlight another file, quick look will change to showing you the new file.

That's how I quick-look a whole bunch of things in list view. Highlight top item, space to quick-look, then arrow down to suit. If you want to move alphabetically, tab to next item.
